Confirm each school’s requirements
Schools differ in the number and type of letters they accept. Check MSAR and each school’s current admissions page before assigning letters. AMCAS can hold multiple entries, but that does not mean every school wants the maximum.

Protect the writer’s role
Describe your experiences accurately and identify which facts come from your records. Do not convert background into claims that the writer personally observed. Confidential letters should remain under the writer’s control from drafting through submission.
Track without nagging
AMCAS lets applicants see whether a letter is received. Send a concise reminder with the deadline and form rather than asking the writer to reconstruct the process. Acknowledge that the writer must submit the letter or use an institutional designee.

AAMC guidance asks writers to assess suitability for medical school, explain the relationship, distinguish direct from indirect observation, and favor quality over length. If AI assists drafting or editing, the final letter must still reflect the writer’s own assessment, judgment, and firsthand observations.
