NursingCAS Recommender Packet for NP and DNP Applicants

Prepare an NP or DNP reference packet with program rules, nursing experience, population-focus context, and firsthand examples a recommender can verify.

A nursing recommender packet should help a busy manager, APRN, faculty member, or clinical supervisor recover the context needed for a detailed evaluation. It should never blur the line between your application facts and the writer’s independent judgment.

Start with the program—not a generic template—because degree paths, population foci, prompts, and reference-role rules vary.

Map every destination

List each program, degree and population focus, deadline, application system, prompt, and acceptable recommender roles. Note whether the request will arrive from NursingCAS or directly from the school.

  • MSN, DNP, post-master’s, or certificate path
  • Intended population or specialty
  • Required reference roles
  • Ratings, essay prompts, upload format, and deadline

Summarize your nursing foundation

Provide a concise résumé/CV and a one-page context sheet covering licensure, certifications, units or settings, patient populations, responsibilities, leadership, quality work, teaching, and scholarship. Remove protected patient information.

Prompt firsthand memory

Offer two or three brief reminders of situations the recommender actually witnessed: a change in patient condition, family conversation, interdisciplinary conflict, safety concern, process improvement, mentoring moment, or response to feedback.

  • What was happening
  • What you did
  • What the writer directly saw
  • The outcome
  • What you learned or changed

Keep advanced-practice goals specific

Explain the intended role and population without asking the writer to endorse claims outside their knowledge. The packet may supply career context; the reference should remain grounded in the writer’s observations.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Give the writer a destination map, a concise nursing profile, and verifiable moments that connect current practice with advanced-level readiness.

COMPLETE DESTINATION GUIDE

Keep the np & dnp programs requirements in view.

In NursingCAS, references appear only for programs that require them and are submitted electronically by the references themselves through Liaison Letters. Programs may specify acceptable roles or relationships, and some nursing programs use separate application systems, so the destination’s current instructions always control.
